Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 production is on hold

All movement is now at a standstill

The firing of writer-director James Gunn by Disney has put plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 into disarray. After it was essentially set in stone that Gunn would not come back despite cast support, THR reports that pre-production to the threequel has been halted.

Though Disney and Marvel Studios never announced dates for production start and theatrical release for the movie, crew member were already being assembled—now, they are being dismissed, and are free to seek out other work. This current stage in the film's development is being described as a "regrouping" as the studios seek a new director.

THR also reports that Marvel recently met with Thor: Ragnarok and beautiful Kiwi Taika Waititi, but it is unclear what the meeting was for—either fans are getting their wish for a Taika-directed Guardians, or it's a complete coincidence. Regardless, Waititi is already in the middle of shooting his satirical film Jojo Rabbit, in which the director plays literally Hitler.

The debate over Gunn's firing rages on, so I imagine that Disney is focused on retaining the cast despite their low morale. Drax actor Dave Bautista has been the most outspoken out of the rest of the cast, recently calling Disney out in a tweet about Mark Cernovich, the alt-right figure and conspiracy theorist blamed for digging up Gunn's old tweets.

Whether or not you agree with Bautista, publicly trashing your employer may not end with the desired results.

But with this move by the studios, it appears that Disney and Marvel Studios are committed to replacing James Gunn—in a production saga shrouded with doubt and mystery, this is one fact that is now clear as crystal.
